The elements I've been seeing from students are letting one student do all the work in a group (when they are supposed to be working together), copying answers from each other instead of doing the work themselves, and doing just enough to get by. I've seen teachers fight this (both when I was in school and currently) by walking around and monitoring groups and trying to do everything they can to get students interested in the topic. Sometimes they are successful, and sometimes nothing gets through to the students. Features that I can plan into the unit plan are making sure roles are assigned during group work so everyone has something they have to contribute, having homework handed in at the beginning of class in a folder instead of giving the students a chance to cheat off each other once they are seated, and not lecturing at the students for the entire class period each class. Regarding my teaching philosophy, I want to encourage all of my students to be excited and invested in the topics talked about in class and I will encourage independence and self-efficacy to help students complete their work individually without the help of others (unless it's necessary).
